Profile

Tess Hurrell is a UK-based photographic artist whose work moves between fine art and commissioned practice. Born in Zimbabwe in 1975 and raised in South Africa, her early experiences continue to inform a visual language rooted in atmosphere, intimacy, and a sensitivity to place.

After graduating from the University of Brighton in 2006, Hurrell worked for the influential German photographer Wolfgang Tillmans, in London and Berlin. This period shaped her rigorous approach to image-making and her understanding of photography as both a conceptual and material discipline.

Her work has been exhibited and published in the UK and internationally, and is held in collections around the world, including the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Alongside her artistic practice, Hurrell undertakes a number of selected commissions each year. Her approach brings an artist’s eye to each project—whether documenting the quiet intensity of motherhood, creating refined product imagery, or capturing the character of exceptional homes and gardens.
